Program Features

Individualized

  • To meet your individual interests and needs.  The internship staff will work with you to design a program that exceeds the requirements and standards of the program while at the same time providing a learning experience that will best meet your career goals.

  • Individual Elective Rotation (200 hours) to allow you to pursue an area of particular interest

  • Many assignments and projects are also individualized.

Flexible

  • The program can be part-time or full time, with a minimum of 24 hours per week (weekdays), to allow you to meet non-internship obligations.
  • Hours and days are flexible and are usually worked out with your individual preceptors.
  • Geographic location is also flexible and an effort is made to accommodate your needs and limitations as much as possible.

NOTE:  While the program is flexible and we do all we can to be accommodating, most rotations cannot be done on the weekends and if you have a job, your work hours have to be flexible enough to give you at least 24 hours during the week for your rotations.  This is a major commitment of your time and cannot be done "in your spare time."  If you have questions about your schedule, please contact the internship director before applying.  When you accept the offer of the match, it implies an understanding that the internship is your priority activity for the duration of the internship, whether it is completed as a part time or full time experience.

Self-directed

  • You are expected to participate in planning your individual program and arranging for some of your practice sites (community, long term care, and individual elective rotations)
  • Self-direction and flexibility are looked at carefully and carry a great deal of weight in our selection process.
  • You are responsible for arranging your own schedule with your preceptors and for reporting your hours to the internship director.
  • You are expected to be able to assess your learning interests and needs (in conjunction with the internship faculty) and to plan appropriate rotations.
