Intern
Individual Elective Rotations |
|
|
|
All of our
students have the opportunity to explore an area of particular interest
during their individual elective rotation. This rotation is
200 hours. Interns submit a proposal to their
advisor prior to beginning the rotation. This proposal must include
learning goals, activities to meet these goals, and how achievement of the goals will be
evaluated. The advisor will review the proposal, make suggestions and
approve it. |
- Many of our students expand on their
clinical, food service, or community rotation.
- In clinical, interns may expand their staff
relief and cover a particular area. They may also choose to focus in on a particular
disease state or area such as critical care or diabetes.
- In food service, interns usually choose a
particular project to focus on that will enhance their
leadership skills.
Examples include developing and implementing a new program, reorganizing a small food
service department to become more efficient and cost effective, or working with students
assigned to the facility for a food service rotation.
- In community, most students have spent
additional time working with one agency such as Head Start, WIC, and Cooperative
Extension.
-
Several interns have completed their rotation with the clinical
nutrition manager learning about his/her role.
- Interns may
also choose an area that is not
normally covered by the internship. Examples include:

- College teaching--several
interns have taught all or portions of an undergraduate nutrition class and explored
with the professors
what is involved in teaching at the college level
- Corporate Wellness--several interns have
had an interest in corporate wellness and have worked with corporate wellness departments
in some of our corporate accounts. Part of one intern's rotation was to develop a
job description for hiring an RD as part of the department.
- One intern was interested in exploring more
non-traditional roles of a dietitian and completed her
individual elective rotation at a clinical
research facility working with the nutrition team to study various drugs with nutrition
implications
- One intern worked with an interdisciplinary
team in an eating disorder clinic
-
One intern worked with 2 community agencies
providing services for children
- Several interns have completed
experiences that have led to full time positions after graduation.
- One intern worked on a grant to develop a
food pantry with related nutrition education for HIV/AIDS clients
- One intern worked with cooperative
extension developing a position as a food safety specialist
-
One intern worked in a research department
conducting nutrition-related research
- Several of our interns have had an interest
in rehabilitation or long term care and have focused in that area.
- One intern worked in a variety of
facilities and compared procedures at each
- Another intern worked in one facility and
explored all aspects of the RD position in long term care
